How Electromagnetic Flow Meters Work

The meter body is a tube lined with a non-conductive material. Outside the tube, energized electromagnetic coils generate a magnetic field across the full diameter of the pipe. Electrodes positioned perpendicular to the coils detect the voltage induced as the conductive fluid moves through that magnetic field. That signal is directly proportional to flow velocity, which the meter’s processor converts into rate and total flow data.

Because there are no moving parts in the flow stream, there is no pressure loss, and accuracy is not affected by changes in temperature, pressure, density, or viscosity. This makes electromagnetic meters a strong fit for demanding industrial and municipal applications where long-term reliability matters.

SM2000 The SM2000 is built on years of research and field use of electromagnetic flow meter technology. It features processor-based signal conversion with accuracy of ±0.25 percent and is available in sizes from 0.25 to 54 inches. The SM2000 uses a pulsed DC magnetic field for zero point stability, offers corrosion resistant liners for long service life, and includes empty pipe detection and power loss totalization. It is NSF listed and CSA certified.

SM3000 The SM3000 delivers accuracy better than ±0.25 percent with a flow range of 300:1. It is virtually unaffected by density, temperature, pressure, and viscosity changes, and complies with ANSI/NSF Standard 61, Annex G. The SM3000 is available in sizes from 1/4 inch to 24 inches, with liner options including PFA, PTFE, Halar, and hard rubber to match a range of fluid chemistries and temperature conditions.
