Ideal applications: municipal water systems · process lines where shutdown is not permitted · retrofit flow monitoring · leak detection systems

The Sur-Flo Meters & Controls Clamp-On Ultrasonic Meter
The Sur-Flo Clamp-On Ultrasonic Meter is a non-intrusive transit-time ultrasonic flow meter that mounts to the outside of an existing pipe. There is no cutting, no welding, no process interruption, and no risk of leaks from installation. It measures liquid flow from outside the pipe and delivers reliable rate and total flow data without any contact with the process fluid.
Sur-Flo Meters & Controls supplies and supports the Sur-Flo Clamp-On Ultrasonic directly from our Calgary, Alberta facility, with technical assistance available for sizing, installation, and commissioning.
How the Clamp-On Ultrasonic Meter Works
The Sur-Flo Clamp-On Ultrasonic Meter uses transit-time ultrasonic technology. Two transducers clamp onto the outside of the pipe and send ultrasonic signals through the pipe wall and fluid. The meter calculates flow velocity by measuring the difference in signal travel time between the upstream and downstream transducers and converts that to flow rate and total volume.
Because the transducers never contact the process fluid, the meter is not affected by corrosive fluid chemistry, scaling, or debris in the same way that inline meters are. It is well suited for clean liquid applications including water, municipal water supply, and process lines carrying liquids free of significant gas or air entrainment.
No Pipe Modification. No Process Shutdown.
The primary advantage of the clamp-on ultrasonic meter is installation without disruption. Inline meters require cutting the pipe, welding flanges, shutting down the process, and draining the line. The clamps onto the existing pipe and is operational without any of that.
For retrofit applications, systems that cannot be taken offline, or operations where process shutdown carries significant cost, the clamp-on ultrasonic meter is the practical solution.
What the Clamp-On Ultrasonic Meter Is Used For
The Sur-Flo Clamp-On Ultrasonic Meter is used wherever non-intrusive flow measurement is required or preferred.
- Municipal water distribution and treatment plant applications
- Retrofit flow monitoring on existing pipelines with no shutdown
- Process lines where inline installation is not feasible
- Leak detection and flow verification
- Temporary or portable flow measurement
- Systems where process fluid chemistry makes inline meter selection difficult

Industries the Clamp-On Ultrasonic Meter Serves
The TFX-5000 is used across municipal, industrial, and process applications where non-intrusive measurement is a priority.
Municipal Water and Wastewater Water distribution, treatment plant influent and effluent, and utility metering applications where process interruption is not acceptable.
Oil and Gas Flow verification and retrofit monitoring on existing process lines where inline installation would require shutdown.
Industrial Process Any liquid process line where the TFX-5000’s non-intrusive installation and compatibility with existing pipe eliminates the cost and disruption of inline meter installation.
Leak Detection Flow balance and leak detection applications across distribution systems and process facilities.
Why Operations Choose the Clamp-On Ultrasonic Meter
Inline meters require pipe modification, process shutdown, and ongoing maintenance access to the wetted components. The Sur-Flo Clamp-On Ultrasonic Meter eliminates all of that.
- No pipe cutting, welding, or flanging required
- No process shutdown or line draining for installation
- No contact with process fluid, no wetted components to corrode or wear
- Compatible with almost every pipe material and diameter
- 1% measurement accuracy in clean liquid service
- Retrofit-ready for existing pipelines
For applications running high-debris or abrasive fluid service where an inline meter is required, see the Sur-Flo SF1015 Paddle Meter.
